Amazon announced that the Amazon Aurora Global Database will offer businesses new failover options. The Aurora Global Database is a single database that can span up to six AWS Regions and provides disaster recovery from regional outages and global reads with low latency.

According to Amazon, organizations can now seamlessly change the primary AWS Region of their global cluster, the region where writes occur, while maintaining replication between all regions in the global cluster. With this managed scheduled failover capability, organizations can repeatedly change which AWS Region hosts the primary cluster while maintaining the physical topology of the global database and avoiding unnecessary application changes.

In unplanned disaster recovery situations, organizations can move any AWS secondary region to take full read and write responsibilities in less than a minute, according to Amazon.
