Text description of the architects. How to counteract a Gaioleiro building. The basic building of this apartment is a gaioleiro, a typology common in Lisbon between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterized by long and narrow plots, poorly lit and ventilated rooms.

We have tried to counteract this condition by opening windows between rooms, encouraging cross-visions and letting the light in. Before adding a new level to the rooms, a cleaning operation was vital.

Therefore, the project’s first reaction is to expose the ceiling behind the countertop, the original floor beneath the current one, peel layers upon layers of the bathroom walls and open a new balcony in the light well. In this way, the entire apartment gains light, space and ceiling height.

The scope of the project then becomes more detailed. The program will be redistributed, with the rooms now taking up the front of the apartment with a view of the trees in the garden and the living room at the back with a view of the river.

The kitchen will be expanded and the connection to the living room will be improved. A new bathroom, fused with the closet, is created. New wardrobes are added. The connections to the long corridor are being redesigned and the bedroom areas are balanced. In this way the dialogue between addiction and existence, between the needs of the old days and the contemporary desires, the old and the current building technology is consolidated.
