One of the defendant’s lawyers, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, of Colorado also represented the convicted murderer at the Battle of Aurora in 2012.
Alissa is represented by a team of public defenders, including Daniel King, who defended James Holmes, the lunatic who shot and killed a crowded movie theater nearly a decade ago during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 people and injuring 70 Other.
Holmes is currently serving a dozen life sentences without parole – one for each of his victims – plus 3,318 years.

In 2014, King, the senior counsel for the Colorado State Public Defenders’ office, admitted making mistakes in an independent murder case, the Denver Post reported at the time.

King said he had “negligently” defended the man, Sir Mario Owens, including by not cross-examining a witness or calling other witnesses to testify, the report said.

When asked if he qualified as a senior attorney on Owens’ case, King said, “No, not really. But I guess my ego … “

Alissa first appeared in court on Thursday, and his fellow attorney Kathryn Herold said they needed time to assess his undisclosed mental illness.

Alissa is charged with murdering 10 people in a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder on Monday. He is also charged with shooting a police officer who survived.
