Aurora’s Flowing Forth UMC provides “Ashes to go”, a digital neighborhood service and a lent-in-a-box equipment
Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 17th, is the official start of Lent. Typically on this day Christians gather in a ministry of repentance and reflection in which they place ashes on each other’s foreheads in the form of a cross.
Fowing Forth United Methodist Church in Aurora is among the leaders of the ministry and ecumenical organizations creative path to celebrate Ash Wednesday 2021.
On Tuesday, February 16, Flowing Forth UMC will broadcast a fourth annual Fat Tuesday service live on the Church’s YouTube channel from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, February 17, Rev. Derek Rogers, Senior Pastor of Flowing Forth, will impose ashes during a drive through service from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the west parking lot of the Aurora Christian School, 2255 Sullivan Road, Aurora. The public is invited.
At 7 p.m., five United Methodist churches in the Aurora area will jointly sponsor an Ash Wednesday service on the church’s website, Facebook, and YouTube. Attendees include pastors and lay people from Flowing Forth UMC, Wesley UMC, and Bethany of Fox Valley UMC, all in Aurora; Sugar Grove UMC and Kaneville UMC. A voluntary offer goes to the Aurora Area interfaith pantry.
In addition, Flowing Forth UMC has developed a number of resources available to families and households during the five weeks of Lent.
These include “Soul Reset: A Small Group Journey to Wholeness,” a book by Junius Dotson that urges parishioners to reset and reorder their lives in relation to spiritual practices. Small group studies based on the book will be led by volunteers at Zoom February 23-24 and a personal group that will begin February 25. Dotson will be featured in the video segments.
Additional kit contents include a Bible Reading Plan, Ash Wednesday Worship information, and Ash With Burlap Squares, with instructions on how to mix ashes with oil and apply them to the burlap square.
Volunteers will bring the kits to the community members’ homes. In November, volunteers delivered 50 Advent-in-a-Box kits to parishioners’ homes.
Pastor Rogers announced that his fasting sermon will be “Soul Reset”. It starts on February 21st with “Honesty: How’s Your Soul?” and “Empathy: Feel the Emotions” followed on February 28th.
