Day of Giving to Assist Aurora Households in Want by 2020

The city of Aurora will provide food, baby and pet supplies to 1,500 families in need.

AURORA, Colorado – During the summer, the city of Aurora provided groceries to families in its community with its weekly mobile pantry.

At its peak, the volunteers cared for five families for five days.

When the program ended in August it was not. So the city has come up with something new: Aurora Day of Giving.

“Aurora Day of Giving actually came from our Aurora Mobile Food Pantry, which we launched in May,” said Claudine McDonald, community relations director for the City of Aurora.

It’s also part of the city’s new Commitment to Care initiative.

Instead of a weekly event, Aurora Day of Giving takes place once a month, every month through the end of the year, and it will help more people.

“We can now give a family of four enough food for up to ten days,” said McDonald. “So we can double the food and triple the number of people we can serve. 1,500 families in a single day. “

The first Aurora Day of Giving is Saturday September 26th.

Volunteers will provide 100,000 pounds of food, 30,000 diapers, and 10,000 pounds of pet supplies to each member of the Aurora community in need.

“Power up and you’re good to go,” said McDonald. “Everyone is asked to stay in their car and please wear PPE so that everyone is safe. We give each family a slip of paper. The forms we have are very short, but it is meant to make sure that we essentially capture their order accurately. Then they go through the row and then we charge their vehicles. “

Regarding the queuing, McDonald said, “We have put a lot of time and effort into making sure the logistics are in order … to make sure people don’t have to wait that long.”

Saturday’s Aurora Day of Giving opens at 10 a.m. at Gateway High School on 1300 S. Sable Boulevard in Aurora.

The event is a priority for every member of the Aurora community and will last until the supplies run out.
