The hair accessories are included in limited bundles that will be available exclusively on from the 15th week of March. The Breakage Remedy Collection ($ 35) includes a shampoo, conditioner, and leave-on treatment with the scrunchie. To restore damage, each product is formulated with moisturizing glycerin, lactic acid, and Dove’s Nutrient-Lock Serum – a blend of amino acids, conditioning agents, and dipeptides from yeast proteins that the brand says can help strengthen hair. The Hydration Spa Collection ($ 55) consists of a shampoo, conditioner, and headscarf. This set provides your hair with moisture with hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

The last of the three, the Dry Scalp Care Collection ($ 65), offers a pillowcase as well as a shampoo, conditioner, and leave-on treatment. The story goes on

In honor of the limited start, we talked to James about the exciting collaboration, their self-care routine and their products for their beautiful, glowing skin.

Curls: How did this collaboration between Brother Vellies and Dove come about?

Aurora James: I’ve been a big Dove lover since I was younger. I used the classic bar, so many of us. I remember struggling a little with my looks as a teenager. I think a lot of people did too. Dove was one of the first places I really hugged women of all shapes, sizes, and colors in their marketing materials. That’s why I’ve always been a big fan of the brand. I think they are a lifeline for a lot of women.

Dove reached out and said they were releasing this hair therapy collection. They sent it to me and it was really wonderful. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have paid special attention to my skin and hair because I know how much stress can affect it. We decided to do a few things that would complement the product range and that are really great for women too.

Curls: Your brand prides itself on employing and empowering local artisans from around the world. We wonder where you got the silk from to make these products? Who did you work with to bring them to life?

James: Yes, they are all sourced and made in New York. It’s such an interesting thing right now – [because of] With the pandemic, we really had to recalibrate everything that was close to us. I thought it was especially important to make these products in New York.

Curls: Why silk products?

James: I’ve always loved silk. It’s a wonderful natural material, but it’s also very good for my hair and all hair as it helps prevent breakage.

Curls: Why did you choose to create? Specifically a pillow, a headscarf and a hair tie?

James: There are so many hair accessories out there and I’ve been fiddling with a few of them in my head. But I really landed on these three because they felt the easiest to incorporate into your everyday life. I know so many of us are so busy right now and even though we are at home.

Curls: How did you choose the designs and colors?

James: Mint is a signature Brother Vellies color. Cream is a tone that I like to use in any setting. [especially in] Interior design. I love a lot of white and cream – just like brown. I really wanted to tie them to earth tones, and I’ve been on Braun’s side since the beginning of Brother Vellies. I found these three colors together really beautiful.

Curls: How do you use these products? I know I have my satin pillowcase and I’ll put my hood on. And sometimes because my hair is short I might have a Durag, a satin pillowcase, and My hood for extra protection. Do you ever use these products together?

James: Yes absolutely. I just took a shower last night and did a full hair treatment with the scalp products and the dry treatment. I like to often put my hair up in a hair elastic and sleep on the satin pillowcase too, so I do a combination of both.

Curls: Of course, you can wear the headscarf in bed as well – would you encourage people to wear it outside too, or do you see it as something more for the home?

James: No, they can totally wear it outside. I tie it to my Lijadu Billfold bag and always have it with me.

Curls: And do you have a favorite of the three?

James: Hard to choose favorites, but maybe the pillowcase because I really rely a lot on having a silk pillowcase. It’s a really big deal for me in terms of breakage.

Curls: You said hair and skin were an important focus for you, especially during this pandemic. What is your daily skin care routine like?

James: Well, I drink 800 milliliters of water every morning. It’s part of my routine. I have this huge mug that I fill with water. I chug this every morning as soon as I wake up. It’s a great way to give your skin and body the moisture it really needs.

Curls: Are there any current skin care products that you like?

James: Yes, I use Dr. Barbara Sturm face cream and then also Vintner’s Daughter Botanical Serum, which I enjoy. And then Dior has this vitamin C serum that I love too.

Curls: Any tips on self-care?

James: Look, I’ve tried to be extra careful with the things I bring into my home, and I think because we’ve all spent so much time at home, it’s more important than ever that we value what we do Do allow yourself in our rooms and know where these products come from, who made them and how these people were treated.

This month is the month of women’s history and International Women’s Day. When it comes to our beauty products, or products that we bring into our space, we just want people to think a little more about the women who are involved in these pieces. Not just on the public side – not just the designer or whatever, but also our supply chain.

I am very proud of these products. They are made in New York. We use materials that are actually pretty sustainable. I think as we move on in our lives we need to think about how we spend our money because there is a lot of power in that.
