From veteran to volunteer, Aurora man named FOX31 “Hero of the Month”.

AURORA, Colorado (KDVR) – He served years in the Army, but his service in his country did not end there. Because of this, Watik Aleem is honored by Aurora as FOX31 for those serving as Hero of the Month in April 2021.

“Oh man, is this real?” Aleem asked as he presented the badge and a $ 500 Visa gift card from our sponsors, Ford Dealers, Plumbline Services, and The Leo Hill Charitable Trust.

Aleem was posted to Desert Storm and spent time in South Korea. And for the past several years, he has served his Colorado veterans as a commissioner for the Aurora Veterans Affairs Commission. He has been involved in a number of local veteran charities, from the United Veteran Coalition of Colorado to WarriorNOW, a group that works with veterans dealing with mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and addiction too have to fight.

Aleem and the other volunteers look after veterans and contact them daily through Zoom to talk about their lives and problems.

“It took me over 15 years to get the help I needed. But so that I can give something back, I don’t have to keep our fellow veterans waiting as long if I can, ”Aleem told FOX31.

He has also helped homeless veterans find food, shelter and work. Friends say aleem is the definition of what it means to put service above oneself.

“I’m proud of these things that helped me get together. So I want to share this with my veterans and make sure they get the help they need,” he said.

The Honor Bell Foundation has been celebrating 3,000 since 2016. Funeral ceremony

Ask anyone who knows him and they will tell you that Aleem is the embodiment of the word “hero”. So it makes sense that we should make the title official by naming it our Hero of the Month.
