Lawrenceville Lawn, a 5.5-acre public park, underwent a $ 1.8 million renovation for 14 months to further improve the city’s life, work, and play. In addition to the existing volleyball courts and playground, the upgraded Lawrenceville Lawn features new amenities, including a 40 x 60 foot permanent amphitheater, two performance levels, patio umbrellas for tables, plus additional bathrooms and public parking.

“The renovations and additions to the Lawrenceville lawn are just another visual representation of the city of Lawrenceville’s commitment to the arts, entertainment and community,” said David Still, Lawrenceville Mayor. “The amphitheater and other improvements will further position downtown Lawrenceville as a travel destination and provide a variety of experiences for residents and visitors to our city.”

Architect and design partner Stevens & Wilkinson, contractors from Bayne Development Group and geotechnical consultants from GeoHydro led the renovation, which was completed in early 2021.

Since 2006, the Aurora Theater and the City of Lawrenceville have partnered with musicals under the stars. The program has evolved over the years and has taken many forms and titles. Disney’s “Newsies” is the second installment in the new tradition, Broadway on the Lawn, released in 2019 as a greeting to Broadway with a live performance of “In the Heights”.

To celebrate the completion of the project, the city will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony before the premiere.

The Aurora Theater, Gwinnett’s only professional performing arts organization and the second largest professional theater company in Georgia, is relaunching Disney’s “Newsies” after its successful opening in 2018-2019. Inspired by the real-life newsboy strike of 1899, the musical publishes the titan Joseph Pulitzer trying to use the newsboy to increase profits.

Everything changes, however, when Jack Kelly and his group of “Newsies” come on stage. This intoxicating, Tony Award winning musical is based on the Disney film.

The Aurora Theater production of “Newsies” stars Greg Kamp as Jack Kelly, Kate Bailey as Katherine Plumber, Anthony Rodriguez as Joseph Pulitzer, Russell Alexander II as Crutchie, Marcello Audino as Davey and Mahalia Jackson as Medda Larkin.

Production is led by the award-winning creative team: director Justin Anderson (assistant artistic director of Aurora Theater) and musical director Ann-Carol Pence (co-founder and assistant producer of Aurora Theater).

In support of public health, masks are promoted and social distancing is enforced at this event. The participants are manned by city workers and volunteers. The event staff will provide placeholders on the Lawrenceville Lawn prior to the event to provide registered attendees with socially distant “pods” in front of the stage. Sun loungers are allowed. Grocers will be on site.
