Metropolis of Aurora is finding out payment caps for third get together grocery suppliers like DoorDash and Grubhub
AURORA, Colorado – AURORA, Colorado – At Aurora’s Mango House, Jasmine Syrian Food is a modern take on the American dream.
“When I got here, I worked four times to make this dream come true,” said Mohamad, owner of Jasmine Syrian Food, who did not want to be fully identified for this story.
Mohamad was born in Syria. He and his family fled the country when civil war broke out. They came to the US as refugees and hoped for a better life.
Now at 24, Mohamad has his own business.
“I take orders, I cook the orders, I serve, I wash the dishes, I go shopping for the business, I market the business,” said Mohamad.
But, like many other restaurants, the novel coronavirus pandemic has slowed his company’s growth, forcing him to use third-party delivery points like DoorDash and Grubhub.
“Sometimes we get so many orders through these services and when we get the check, you know, it’s like we’ve sold more,” said Mohamad.
His September statement from Grubhub had a total of 16 orders valued at $ 616. After all the fees, he took home only $ 391.
The Colorado Restaurant Association worked hand-in-hand with the City of Denver to achieve a 15% fee cap for these businesses. In Aurora, a similar plan is in the early stages.
“We don’t necessarily know the schedules and we don’t necessarily know what the final product will be, but it will likely aim for a fee cap on the restaurant side of the delivery fee structure and there will likely be some disclosure and transparency for consumers and there will likely be an element of consent for restaurateurs and third parties, “said Mollie Steinemann, manager of local government affairs for the Colorado Restaurant Association.
Aurora Councilor Curtis Gardner is leading the proposal in the city. Advice. He says it will be presented to the Management and Finance Committee on October 27th and if everything goes as planned, a final vote could take place on November 15th.
“It really hurts all businesses. It’s not just me, you know?” Said Mohamad.
