Mustard building – the inner serenity. The second chapter of the rose house begins with the city code. The rules allow us to add a new extension to the existing building at the rear of the property overlooking Princesa Street.

As the heritage of the city center of Vila Real de Santo Antonio is protected, we had to follow strict rules: (1) All new buildings must be exactly 12 m high. (2) To make a clear distinction between old and new buildings, the design facade should not resemble the Pombalino style – rectangular French windows arranged in an orthogonal grid.

We took up the challenge of the regulations and created a four-story building that is split in two to let more light into the central courtyard. In order to improve the opportunities for social interaction and the common amenities of the residential complex, it was decided to place a small swimming pool and a terrace for sunbathing on the top floor.

For the facade we designed a set of sliding windows with a pane that are not aligned. The size of the windows and the ability to disappear within the walls can almost turn the living rooms into outdoor patios that make the most of the region’s weather.

For the interior, our option was to explore the opposite of the exotic of the existing building and design serene interiors that are similar in all apartments with wood and cremeterrazzo. To this relaxed atmosphere, we’ve added a bold element – an open wooden partition in a gradient of pink that organizes the social space of the apartments and creates the chromatic connection at the beginning of this story: the rose building, which is now mustard-rose.
