The space agency has approved two missions to explore the fireball and the system that powers space weather near Earth.

Understanding the physics that drive the solar wind and explosions – including solar flares and coronal mass ejections – could one day help scientists predict these events that can affect human technology and researchers in space.
“We are very excited to add these new missions to the growing fleet of satellites that survey our Sun-Earth system with an amazing array of unprecedented observation instruments,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for science at NASA’s Washington headquarters, in a statement .
Under the direction of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), NASA and other international partners have committed to developing the Epsilon mission (Solar-C EUVST mission) for the extremely ultraviolet high-throughput spectroscopy telescope (EUVST).
Scheduled to hit the market in 2026, EUVST is a solar telescope that will study how the solar atmosphere releases solar wind and powers eruptions of solar material.
These phenomena spread from the sun and affect space radiation throughout the solar system.
The budget for NASA’s contributions to EUVST is $ 55 million (Dhs 202 million).
The Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (EZIE) will study electrical currents in the Earth’s atmosphere that connect the aurora to the Earth’s magnetosphere – part of Earth’s intricate space weather system that responds to solar activity and other factors.
The Auroral Electrojet (AE) index is a common measure of geomagnetic activity levels, although the details of the structure of these currents are not understood.
EZIE won’t launch until June 2024 at the earliest, NASA said, adding that the total budget for the mission is $ 53.3 million (Dhs 195 million).
