The event, which was billed as a candlelight and flower vigil, started at 5:00 p.m. When people honored McClain, they quietly picked up a memorial erected for him and shared their feelings about his death and the lack of accountability for how it happened. We Shall Overcome Now! Organized.

McClain died in August 2019 after someone called the police and claimed he was “sketchy”. Aurora police put him in a stranglehold and rescue workers injected him with ketamine as a sedative, causing him to pass out. He died later in hospital.

The officers have been cleared of the wrongdoing, but the matter is being re-investigated at the state level. There is also an ongoing federal investigation into McClain’s death.

Questions about his death and calls for justice have resurfaced as local and national demonstrations against police violence and racism continue. Tonight, as people gathered in Aurora, other vigils for McClain were due to be held that same night in Chicago and West Orange, New Jersey.
