West Aurora Excessive college students volunteer within the pantry on Veterans Day

Ten West Aurora students celebrated Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11th by volunteering at the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry.

The students are members of the West Air Force’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit IL-20141.

Master Sergeant Scott Hellinger, the aerospace instructor, led the delegation.

The Aurora-based Pantry hosted morning food distribution for veterans and their families.

The event opened with the publication of the colors by West’s AFJROTC color guard. The West Aurora unit consists of 168 students, 68 of whom are on a drill team.

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a subdivision of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, an elective junior military science class offered at many high schools.

The West Aurora unit won the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit for the 2019-20 school year. The award recognizes AFJROTC entities who have exceeded normal expectations and demonstrated outstanding service to their school and community while fulfilling the mission to develop citizenship for America.

With this recognition, West’s program was in the top 10 percent of units nationwide.
